AURA Commends FCC Leadership for Initiating UAS Use of C-band

Robust Dynamic Frequency Management Systems Key to Spectrum Utilization

McLean, Va. (August 30, 2024) – AURA Network Systems applauded the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) actions enabling critical wireless communications supporting uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) in a dedicated portion of the 5 GHz band (5030-5091 MHz).

The FCC Report and Order (adopted Thursday, August 29) will ensure that spectrum rules meet both current and future frequency needs of evolving technologies such as UAS. The Report and Order also relies on dynamic frequency management systems (DFMS) designed to coordinate access to the spectrum and ensure its safe and efficient use.

AURA Chief Executive Officer Bill Tolpegin commended the Commissioners for advancing the rules. “We are at the beginning of a revolution in aviation, and sufficient spectrum availability for UAS will be crucial to unleashing the vast transformational power of Advanced Air Mobility. Equally critical is that the spectrum used to support uncrewed flights is not only licensed and fully dedicated for aviation but also managed to guarantee coverage along flight routes. The FCC’s actions are a huge step toward realizing the emerging potential of AAM.”

Tolpegin noted that AURA utilizes its existing licensed 450 MHz spectrum to provide a private, commercial communications network so aircraft operators can plan flights with the company’s DFMS, which it plans to leverage for the 5 GHz band. Its groundbreaking spectrum management system ensures that airborne assets can receive and transmit critical information on aviation-designated spectrum at any and all points during a given flight.

“We look forward to working with the FCC to ensure the U.S. continues to lead the world by meeting the skyrocketing demands for evolving technologies and solutions necessary for mission-critical applications including public safety, as well as multiple other industries such as energy, transportation, and agriculture.”
